• MARES MANAGEMENT

The welfare of mares is a top priority for Avantea. A healthy environment, meticulous management, and a respectful approach not only enhance the quality of life for the animals but also contribute to the success of assisted reproduction techniques.

Mare Management - Well-being and Fertility

Safe and controlled environment

Mares at Avantea are housed in an environment specifically designed to minimize stress and promote well-being.

  • Spacious and comfortable stalls designed to provide adequate space and safety.
  • Bright and well ventilated rooms.
  • Daily access to the carousel and paddocks, enabling horses to maintain regular physical activity.

Daily care and monitoring

Each donor mare is closely monitored by a team of veterinarians dedicated to ensuring her health and well-being.

  • Regular veterinary check-ups to maintain optimal physical and reproductive health..
  • Strict vaccination and health protocols to safeguard animal well-being.
  • Daily monitoring of general and reproductive condition.
  • Regular gynecological checks essential for the planning of OPU and Embryo Transfer procedures.
  • Access to specialized professionals, including farriers and veterinarians with expertise in assisted reproduction.

Nutrition and well-being

A balanced, high-quality diet is crucial for both the well-being of mares and the quality of their oocytes.

  • A tailored and nutritionally balanced diet to meet each mare’s specific needs.
  • High quality fodder.
  • Monitoring dietary intake to ensure optimal weight and body condition.

Proper nutrition supports the production of healthy and viable oocytes, enhancing the success rate of reproductive procedures.

Recovery and assistance after procedures

After an OPU procedure, each mare is closely monitored to ensure a smooth recovery:

  • Continuous monitoring in the hours following the procedure, assessing behavior and appetite.
  • Recovery in a quiet and safe environment with return to the stable only when the mare has completely recovered from the sedation.
  • Control of temperature and general well-being over the next 48 hours.

Avantea advises a gradual return to physical activity in the days following the procedure. Our aim is to ensure that each horse returns to perfect shape as soon as possible without any impact on their routine or future activities.
